The Benefits of PVD Stainless Steel vs. Plated Jewelry
In summary: Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) on marine-grade 316L stainless steel is vastly superior to traditional jewelry plating. While standard gold plating applies a microscopic, temporary layer of gold over reactive base metals like brass or copper, PVD utilizes a vacuum coating process to bond 18k gold to stainless steel at a molecular level. This results in jewelry that is 100% waterproof, highly resistant to tarnishing, and completely hypoallergenic.
What is PVD Coating?
Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is an advanced manufacturing process. Instead of dipping jewelry into a chemical bath (traditional plating), the piece is placed in a vacuum chamber. The 18k gold is vaporized and bonded directly into the surface of the marine-grade 316L stainless steel core. This creates a brilliant, durable finish that is up to ten times thicker and exponentially more resilient than standard flash plating.
PVD Stainless Steel vs. Traditional Plated Jewelry
- Water and Sweat Resistance: Traditional plated jewelry easily degrades when exposed to water, sweat, or lotions. PVD stainless steel is structurally engineered to be completely waterproof, meaning you can shower, swim, and work out without removing your pieces.
- Skin Safety and Allergies: Standard plating often hides cheap base metals like brass, copper, and nickel. Once the thin plating wears off, these metals react with your skin, causing irritation or turning your skin green. PVD on 316L stainless steel is strictly hypoallergenic and free of nickel, lead, and cadmium.
- Long-Term Durability: Flash plating is designed for fast fashion and has a severely limited lifespan. PVD bonding is designed for extreme durability, resisting scratches, scuffs, and daily wear-and-tear while maintaining its gold finish.
The PRESSIE Standard
We refuse to use traditional plating methods. Every piece in our collection is crafted using 18k gold vacuum-bonded to a marine-grade stainless steel base. Because we rely on the empirical superiority of PVD technology, every item is backed by Our Forever Guarantee—if it ever tarnishes, fades, or breaks due to a manufacturing defect, it is covered for life.
